Student Support Services

GBAT wishes to ensure that all students are supported in their studies to the fullest extent possible, GBAT will ensure full resources of GBAT are made available to ensure that the student achieves the required level of competency in all accredited courses. GBAT can provide access to specialist support for participants who may have special needs, including assistance for

• language, literacy and numeracy
• people from disadvantaged backgrounds
• persons from non-English speaking backgrounds
• people with disabilities
• people in rural or isolated locations.

GBAT can provide access to specialist assistance for students who require support with language, literacy or numeracy (LLN). Prior to commencement of training, GBAT will assess each student’s LLN needs and those identified as having language, literacy and numeracy difficulties that could affect their ability to complete their studies will be provided with access to external specialist services to assist them. Assistance will be administered to participants identified with special needs in the form of information and/or referrals as required. GBAT will work in cooperation with the external specialist services to ensure successful outcomes. Community Health Centres – these centres offer a range of services which often include counselling. They receive a variety of government funding, and provide services to each local government area across Victoria. Although these centres often can have waitlists for counselling they are usually free, or charge a minimal cost according to income. They will use interpreters for students needing to speak a language other than English, and often have multilingual staff. You can find your local community health provider here.

Melbourne Counselling Service – generalist counselling program offering free, face-to-face appointment-based counselling in a city office. Counselling services are available to people who are experiencing financial hardship and want to discuss multiple or complex problems. Eligibility for international students is assessed based on income. Ph. (03) 9653 3250

The Mingary Counselling Service – a low-cost counselling service in the centre of Melbourne. There are no waiting lists or limits on the number of sessions a client may attend. Referrals are not required. Mingary operates under the auspices of St Michael’s Uniting Church, but does not promote religious beliefs. Swinburne Psychology Clinic – low-cost counselling service that all members of the community can access.  Special provisions can be made for people from non-English speaking backgrounds, and bi-lingual counsellors are often available. Phone: (03) 9214 8653 Emailpsychclinic@swin.edu.au

The University of Melbourne Psychology Clinic – provides low-cost clinical services to adults 18 years and over living in Melbourne. The Clinic is part of the University’s professional training program. Postgraduate students working towards higher degrees see adult patients under supervision of senior clinicians, who are registered clinical psychologists. The Victoria University Psychology Clinic – operates as part of the professional training for postgraduate psychology students at the University. Assessment and treatment is provided by provisional psychologists, who are supervised by experienced Clinical Psychologists.
